For decades wedding photographs were formal affairs. Early cameras were large, heavy, and slow. Photographers had to control every element. Families were placed into rigid poses, told where to look, and asked to smile on command. The portraits could be beautiful. They rarely held the spirit of the celebration. They looked like a catalog, not a living love story.

The shift began in the late 1980s and opened wide in the 1990s. Cameras got lighter, faster, and better in low light. Photographers could leave the tripod.
